Major Airline Ceases Immediately

Late afternoon May 1, 2026, talks with a possible bailout by the government and the airline could not come to an agreement. Many media outlets within an hour of failed talks sent out media posts. Fire and Aviation TV posted that this weekend the airline would cease if no other last-minute deal could be made.

Flight operations began as charter one airlines in 1983. In May 1992 the airline was renamed Spirit Airlines.  Thirty-four years later with the rename of the airline. The same month the airline, as of 3 am May 2, 2026, ceases to operate all flights and systems.

For many it was the cornerstone and only ultra-low-cost airline for many to fly. By far this will cause ripple effects in the airline industry and at a cost to the public flying in future years to come. It is deeply saddening and concerning with this airline and comes at no shock. Fire and Aviation TV has been following this since years ago when Frontier Airlines first made a bid to purchase the airline. Only for JetBlue to proceed forward with a deal only later to be quashed by a judge denying the airlines to merge. We even created a X media account for future media called JetblueSpirit.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to all airline employees, as even Fire and Aviation TV has been profoundly impacted by this loss and others.
