Fifty-Nine years ago, 1966, an airline vision was founded with a difference to others. As it began officially as an airline structure March 9 1967actual operations did not begin until June 18, 1971.
The airline established as Air Southwest Co later changed before the first flight in 1971 to Southwest Airlines Co. Herb Keller and Rollin King founded an airline designed for all passengers. No bag fees and sitting where you want became a symbol of freedom when flying. A culture that for decades stood out from the rest of the airline industry.

That has all but gone as in May 2025 bags no longer flew free. The last stand of individuality disappears January 27, 2026. From May to this day forward and in January 2027 the original creators of the airline would never had imagine the way it has become.
Starting January 2026, seat selection will require a fee. Southwest Airlines is likely to lose loyal customers to competitors since it no longer offers distinct advantages over other airlines. It has been said that people wanting to seat themselves between rows 7 to 13 is preferred seating. That alone will cost you an additional $46 dollars for window or aisle and $41 for middle seat in those rows. It is sad to say that what was once born a great airline has lost its identity and foundation.
