For many airports stateside and rapid increase of passengers flowing through the last few months has broken records since last year. Covid19 pandemic left many airports and airlines barely seeing capacity of people flying due to various lockdowns and shelter in place.
International flying or even conversation of such was not even on anyone’s mind due to some many complex and changing rules due to various variants and outbreaks worldwide. Until the last few months a break begun from dispensing vaccines and vaccinated people. Thus, lowering the infectious rates and CDC numbers. This increased the number of people flying tenfold and then some. Airlines increased routes added those they cancelled from smaller regions We even introduced a few new ones, Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways.
Now comes great news from Icelandair and BWI. A nonstop service from Reykjavik, Iceland to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport starting May 13, 2022. The original flights will be four weekly nonstop flights through October 2022. With this it gives great opportunities to expand and connect to other European markets. A positive economic addition was mentioned by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan recently.
Ricky Smith, Executive Director of BWI said “We look forward to working with Icelandair to offer safe and efficient service for our shared passengers”. His statement went on to say that June 18, 2021, was the busiest day for departing passengers since the start of the pandemic. Reports from the Transportation Security Administration screened 26,807 passengers. This makes BWI the busiest airport in that region to date.
Iceland is now open to all vaccinated U.S. passengers. Many parts of Europe too are beginning to open as we go to press with this. Icelandair will operate a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft on this route once it begins.
